Spanning the entire island, the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) S'pore 2009 Torch Relay will involve more than 180 torch-bearers and over 70,000 participants.

Centred on the theme of "Igniting Sporting Passion in Asia's Youth", The Torch Relay event will be held over two days, promoting the three Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. According to Mr. Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of Steering Committee, Singapore Asian Youth Games Organising Committee (SAYGOC), the Torch Relay event is expected to be a monumental occasion -
a symbolic act in the sporting world and a way of rallying the people together.

The Community and Corporate Leg will take place on Sunday, 28 June 2009. From the Kallang Waterfront, three torch relays will fan out simultaneously to the Western (representing friendship), Central (respect) and Eastern (excellence) areas of Singapore, covering a total of five districts. With a host of community events being planned along the routes and various dignitaries expected to participate at the different districts, the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) Singapore 2009 Torch Relay certainly promises to be an exciting affair.

Here is a breakdown of the events for the 1st day of AYG all over S'pore:

Respect Route:
Central Singapore District
Event: Ang Mo Kio - Yio Chu Kang Community Sports Festival

After covering the heartlands, the flame will be brought to Singapore's retail hub, Orchard Road.Stretching five kilometres, this route will pass through some of Singapore's more prominent retail landmarks such as Ngee Ann City and Suntec City.

Culminating at the AYG Games Village (Swissôtel the Stamford, Singapore), Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan will complete the 1st leg of the Torch Relay.

The 2nd leg of the relay has been dubbed the School Leg, which will coincide with the AYG Opening Ceremony taking place on 29 June.
The 45 schools that will be taking part in this leg mirror the 45 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competing at the Games. Three torch bearers will be selected per school, comprising principals, teachers, students and parents & commonwealth sec is one of them!

Similarly divided into three groups (of 15 schools each) according to the Olympic values, these schools will each run a relay within its compound. At the same time, they will be showcasing their own sporting history, as well as the culture of their twinning country for the AYG.
The three torches will then converge at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the AYG Opening Ceremony, where they will be used to ignite the AYG Flame, welcoming the young athletes from all over Asia.
